CARRIE FONDER

Detroit-based artist Carrie Fonder glamorizes two facets of Indian culture not normally held in high regard: rickshaws and Hijras. Fonder’s sculpture/ installation/ performance piece comments on social roles, the construction of identity and the transgression of norms. Fonder’s sense of humor is evident in a customized autorickshaw, which encourages us to understand, accept and empathize with those who “customize” their exteriors –be it their mode of transportation or their gender– and ultimately suggests the possibility of a transmutable Indian identity.
